Submerged Hollow Fiber MBR Membrane Module

  • Our MBR membrane modules are designed specifically for membrane bio reactor (MBR) systems, using reinforced PVDF hollow fiber UF membranes with inner support. It is type of submerged UF membrane. They provide exceptional mechanical strength without fiber breakage or delamination, and feature outstanding resistance to oxidation, aging, chemicals, and fouling. The membrane bio-reactor PVDF fibers undergo a special hydrophilic treatment that extends service life and enhances anti-fouling performance. Widely applied in industrial wastewater, leachate, municipal and domestic sewage, aquaculture, and food processing wastewater, these UF membranes ensure reliable, long-term operation and excellent performance in membrane bio reactor applications.

MBR Membrane Module Models

The full name of MBR is Membrane Bioreactor. Membrane bioreactor mbr technology  can be classified into three main types: solid-liquid separation membrane bioreactors (the most widely used type), aeration membrane bioreactors, and extractive membrane bioreactors.

MBR Membrane Module Flux

Membrane flux is an important operating parameter of MBR systems. Membrane flux, also known as membrane permeate flux, refers to the amount of permeate produced per unit membrane area under normal operating conditions. The unit is m³/(m²·h) or m³/(m²·d).

When the membrane is fouled, the permeate flux will decrease, resulting in reduced water production. When the membrane permeate flow rate or effluent quality declines significantly, or when the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the membrane module exceeds 0.05 MPa, membrane cleaning should be carried out.

No.Wastewater TypeRecommended Membrane FluxUnit
1Polysilicon Wastewater0.2m³/(m²·d)
2Landfill Leachate0.2m³/(m²·d)
3Pharmaceutical Wastewater0.2–0.3m³/(m²·d)
4Aquaculture Wastewater0.25–0.3m³/(m²·d)
5Food Industry Wastewater0.25–0.3m³/(m²·d)
6Petroleum & Chemical Wastewater0.2–0.3m³/(m²·d)
7Municipal & Domestic Wastewater0.4m³/(m²·d)

MBR Membrane Module Pretreatment

Pretreatment is extremely important for the MBR process. Domestic wastewater contains a large amount of hair, fibers, and other suspended materials, which can accumulate on the membrane surface, reduce the effective filtration area, and lead to membrane fouling.

ParameterAllowable Range
Feed Water SourceApplicable to various water sources
pH Value1–10; special attention required for scaling-prone feed water
Maximum Particle Size in Feed≤2 mm
Oil Content in Feed<2 mg/L; oil removal pretreatment is required if exceeded
Hardness (CaCO₃, mg/L)<150; determined based on pH value, scaling tendency, and other factors

MBR Membrane Module Cleaning

MBR Membrane Module Cleaning

Poor pretreatment performance may lead to membrane fouling. Membrane fouling can be controlled and removed through the following three methods:

1. Improving Pretreatment

Enhance the pretreatment process by:

  • Installing fine screens with openings smaller than 1 mm;
  • Installing fine screens on the side stream of the biological tank;
  • Installing fine screens inside the membrane tank.

2. Physical Cleaning

Physical cleaning can be carried out using manual cleaning, mechanical cleaning, or clean water flushing methods. The most common method is backwashing.

3. Chemical Cleaning

Chemical cleaning uses chemical agents to soak and clean the membrane surface to remove accumulated contaminants.

For hollow fiber membranes, common cleaning methods include:

  • Backpressure backwashing;
  • Constant-pressure hydraulic flushing;
  • Chemical cleaning.

During chemical cleaning, the membrane modules need to be removed from the membrane assembly before cleaning.

Chemical Cleaning Procedure

During chemical cleaning, sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) solution with a concentration of 0.5% or oxalic acid solution with a concentration of 0.5% is generally used.

Before cleaning, first stop the suction pump and blower. The cleaning solution is then introduced by gravity through the chemical inlet located at the upper part of the membrane module and flows into the membrane fibers.

The dosage of the cleaning solution should be controlled according to the operation manual. Generally, the consumption of each cleaning chemical is approximately 3–5 L per membrane module.

After injecting the cleaning solution, allow the membrane to soak for approximately 1–3 hours, then discharge the solution using the suction pump.

If necessary, hydrochloric acid or an equivalent chemical agent can be added for further cleaning. After another 1–3 hours of soaking, discharge the cleaning solution again using the suction pump.

The entire cleaning process usually takes approximately 4–5 hours. After cleaning, the membrane flux can be restored.
